Rafael Granero Belinchón, University of Cantabria
One night, I dreamed of being a researcher, and today I’m…

It was probably because I don’t usually remember what I dream about, but I applied to a FPI for the CSIC, mostly due to the extremely poor state of the job marked back in 2008.
After finishing my thesis, I couldn’t find a teaching job in Spain, so I accepted a job offer from the University of California. The overall situation was slightly outlandish, and it was hard to maintain my level of stress under control. I defended my thesis on a Monday, and I took the plane the following Saturday. Fortunately, their red tape is so minimal it can be filled even while jet lagged, and they never asked for a language degree. After some years unable to buy jamón serrano in the supermarket, I returned to Spain with a job as an auxiliary professor in the University of Cantabria. I don’t yet know if I’ll stay here, but as they say in California “one step at a time”.
